Welcome to the website of Dr Hugh Atkinson…

Hugh is Senior Lecturer in Politics at London South Bank University (LSBU). He teaches on a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at London South Bank University, ranging from politics to education for sustainability. He has wide experience of supervising dissertations at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

His research spans a number of areas, including politics, democracy, climate change, sustainability and education for sustainability. He has published a number of articles and books on these topics and his latest book published in June 2012 is Local Democracy, Civic Engagement and Community: from New Labour to the Big Society. Hugh is currently co-editing a book entitled Planetary Challenges: the Agenda Laid Bare in The Challenge of Sustainability: Linking Politics, Learning and Education, which is to be published by Policy Press, University of Bristol in October 2014.

A political scientist with a keen interest in sustainability, both on a personal and an intellectual level, Hugh is a practitioner as well as an academic. A member of the Labour Party for over 25 years, he was an elected local councillor in the London borough of Croydon for 4 years. He is an active member of the steering group of the London Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). He tweets regularly on sustainability, climate change, and community and local democracy.

Hugh lives in Shirley in the London borough of Croydon with wife Ros Wade (Director of the post-graduate Education for Sustainability programme at London South Bank University). His daughter Donna is an arts curator in northern California.
